Southend 2-3 West Ham: Dimitri Payet stars on debut as £11m signing nets twice in win

West Ham new boy Dimitri Payet was the star man at Roots Hall on Saturday
The French attacker scored twice as the east London outfit beat Southend
Kevan Hurst and Jack Payne scored for the hosts but it wasn't enough
Luke Prosser's second-half own-goal secured Slaven Bilic's side the win

By Daniel Prescott

Dimitri Payet's West Ham career got off to the perfect start on Saturday as he scored twice in a victory against Southend at Roots Hall.

Payet, who arrived from Marseille for £10.7million, netted a stunning free kick past Daniel Bentley on debut to level the scores following Kevan Hurst's opener.

The French international was left celebrating for the second time moments later as he gave the away side the lead before Jack Payne levelled just before the break.

West Ham striker Diafra Sakho (left) congratulates team-mate Dimitri Payet on his debut goal at Roots Hall

Southend goalkeeper Daniel Bentley can only look on as West Han new boy Payet scores a stunner

But it was Payet who would have the last laugh again as his second-half cross was turned in by Southend defender Luke Prosser.

Slaven Bilic’s side had dominated the opening 20 minutes on the coast yet somehow found themselves a goal down against the run of play when Hurst netted.

The midfielder worked the ball into the box well before letting fly with a deflection helping the ball past new West Ham goalkeeper Darren Randolph and into the roof of the net.

However, Payet was determined to make sure his debut was a winning one and he turned the game on its head with two goals inside five first-half minutes.

The Shrimpers responded well to going behind and found themselves level just before the break when Payne nodded in the equaliser after some good work.

Like in most friendly matches at this stage of pre-season an abundance of substitutions destroyed the tempo of the game for the paying spectators.

Diafra Sakho looked the liveliest on the pitch despite missing Thursday’s narrow Europa League qualifier victory against Birkirkara through suspension but the best he could do was hit the side netting.

In the end it was Payet again who proved the difference as he crossed the ball in low on 56 minutes, only to see Prosser slice into his own net to send West Ham home with the win.

Payet is congratulated by his new West Ham team-mates as he makes the perfect first impression on debut

Phil Brown admits Payet was so good he asked Bilic to substitute him

The Southend boss was full of praise for the West Ham summer signing.

Tim Poole

Southend manager Phil Brown admits West Ham United playmaker Dimitri Payet was so good he asked Slaven Bilic if he was going to take him off to make their friendly more even, according to the club's official website.

Payet was on the scoresheet during his West Ham debut and dazzled the Hammers faithful with glimpses of what his big-money signing promised.

And the 28-year-old's impact was not lost on rival boss Brown.

Indeed, he told Southend's official site: "I'm delighted for my chairman and for the Club that West Ham played a strong squad.

"There was one player - Dimitri Payet - who showed absolute quality and I asked Slaven whether he was going to take him off and make it more of an even game!"

Time to get excited?

The moment Payet arrived at Upton Park, he was generating enormous amounts of excitement from the West Ham faithful.

And the excitement isn't about to stop after Saturday afternoon's performance. Indeed, the 28-year-old produced goals, creativity and moments of magic. It was only a friendly but, as far as debuts go, it was a dream one.

Could the West Ham summer signing prove he is worth every penny? Payet isn't fully fit or match sharp yet. Just imagine how good he could be when he is - and if he maintains his current levels of enthusiasm and determination.

Andy Carroll to be out of action until mid-October

West Ham's injury-prone £17m signing facing even longer on the sidelines

By Jason Burt

Andy Carroll is not expected to return to first-team action for West Ham United until the middle of October.

The striker suffered a knee injury in February that ruled out for the remainder last season and is undergoing his rehabilitation. The club are not rushing him back.

West Ham want to ensure the 26-year-old is fully fit and although there have been suggestions from co-chairman David Gold that he will return in early September the club want him to undergo his own ‘pre-season’ training schedule to guard against further problems.

Carroll has struggled for fitness since his club record £17.5million move to West Ham from Liverpool in 2013 with a series of problems – the latest of which is the serious knee medial ligament injury he suffered against Southampton, when he was forced to stay on the pitch as the team were down to 10 men and had used all three substitutes.

Carroll is training hard, having worked over the summer on his own to regain his fitness, and has worked with the first-team squad but is unlikely to be selected despite West Ham’s need to improve their striking options under Slaven Bilic.

The new manager has already given Carroll assurances that he will be an important part of his plans but, at the same time, West Ham do not want to risk the England international breaking down again.

West Ham accept that Carroll’s size and style of play make him more vulnerable to injuries but want to reduce the risk as much as possible. Even so his continued absence is a blow.

Even when Carroll is fit and with Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia it is understood that West Ham remain in the market to bring in another striker to add to the options available to Bilic who is also dealing with the demands of the Europa League as he prepares for the forthcoming Premier League campaign.

West Ham sold Stewart Downing last week back to his first club, Middlesbrough, with the Championship club paying an initial £5.25million for the 30-year-old winger. However the fee will be improved by a further £1.5million should Middlesbrough gain promotion to the Premier League at any time during Downing’s five-year contract.

West Ham had initially demanded £7.5million for Downing who was also wanted by Sunderland and Newcastle United. Leicester City also considered a bid – before Nigel Pearson was sacked as manager – but Downing wanted to return to Middlesbrough.

Roma set Fiorentina asking price for West Ham United target

Roma have told Fiorentina they will have to stump up at least €13 million if they are to sign Mattia Destro.

The Italian, who spent last season on loan at AC Milan, has been the subject of interest from Premier League side West Ham United but would prefer to remain in Serie A with Fiorentina.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the Viola would like to take the 24-year-old on loan, however the Giallorossi will only consider letting the Italian international join them if the deal is permanent for a fee above €13 million.

The clubs have spent the summer vying for the signature of Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah, who controversially failed to extend his stay in Florence, but the Giallorossi may be willing to compromise in negotiations for Destro if they can finalise a deal with Chelsea for Salah.

Destro joined the Lupi from Genoa in 2012 and has scored 29 goals during his time in the Italian capital.

Newcastle monitoring James Tomkins' West Ham situation

The Magpies have been linked with West Ham's 26-year-old centre-back.

Newcastle United are 'monitoring' James Tomkins' West Ham United situation, according to the Sunday People.

Indeed, with Steve McClaren's side looking to bolster their defence, Tomkins is said to be interesting the St James' Park outfit as they bid to add to the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum and the expected arrival of Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The People suggest Tomkins' West Ham place is under threat from the arrival of Angelo Ogbonna and that Newcastle will see what happens with regards to the defender's first-team situation.

Could a move happen?

As much as the report attempts to suggest Tomkins' exit is a possibility, any move would seem very unlikely at present.

Indeed, the West Ham defender captained the Hammers in the Europa League the other night and boss Slaven Bilic will want to have time to review the 26-year-old's form at the very least - even if he does sell.

Judging by the noise coming out of Upton Park lately, one would assume Tomkins will play alongside Ogbonna or at least challenge for that second place. So, if Newcastle are indeed hopeful, they may just be knocked firmly back by West Ham.

Kevin Mirallas subject of £6m Hammers bid

Spurs seemed to be leading the race for the Belgium international's signature but now their neighbours are keen to press ahead with their own deal

West Ham have tabled a bid of £6million with Everton for Kevin Mirallas, writes Neil Moxley in the Sunday People.

The Hammers have moved into the race to rival Spurs for the signature of the Belgium international.

Tottenham had hoped to use Aaron Lennon as a makeweight in any swap deal involving the winger. But it appears new Irons boss Slaven Bilic is keen to press ahead with a straight deal and has made the Toffees a cash offer.

Mirallas has just one year left on his deal and has fallen out of favour with boss Roberto Martinez.

However, Everton are unlikely to accept West Ham's offer and are understood to be holding out for around £8m.

West Ham offer a mars bar and some pennies for Mirallas

West Ham United have made a £6m bid for Belgian winger Kevin Mirallas as clubs look to bid low with a view to signing a bargain.

The Daily Mirror claims that Everton will only sell the Belgian if their valuation of £8m is met – which seems very low for a winger who scores double figures in the Premier League, hasn’t reached his prime yet and still has 2 years left on his contract.

The 27 year old winger joined Everton in a £6m fee in 2012 and has said that he would look for Champions League football if he left the club.

This summer Everton have seen low bids for John Stones, James McCarthy and Mirallas as clubs set to swoop on their star assets.

Report: Lanzini to fly to London on Monday

Argentinian journalist Cesar Luis Merlo claims Manuel Lanzini flies to London on Monday to finalize details and sign a one year loan deal with West Ham.

The 22 year old play maker is believed to to have already agreed a loan deal in principle with an option for a permanent transfer after Stewart Downing’s move to Middlesbrough on Thursday.

He hit eight goals in 24 appearances to help Al Jazira Club in the UAE finish second in the Arabian Gulf League last season.

He was previously linked with West Ham in the past but the former River Plate star opted for a move to Al Jazira for a fee of around £5.25million.

West Ham close to signing Esteban Cambiasso after holding talks

West Ham could beat Aston Villa to the signature of Esteban Cambiasso.

Olly Dawes

West Ham have moved closer to a deal for Esteban Cambiasso after holding talks with the player's brother.

Cambiasso, who turns 35 next month, played for Leicester City last season, showing he still has the quality which helped him win the Champions League with Inter Milan in 2010.

After 33 appearances and five goals for the Foxes last season, Cambiasso is out of contract this summer - and could look to move on from the King Power Stadium despite Leicester's hopes of keeping him at the club.

The Sun believe that West Ham are moving closer to signing Cambiasso, having held talks with the player's brother Federico last week, who is also the player's agent - though Aston Villa are also interested in the Argentine.

The report also states that West Ham are also waiting for Alex Song to prove his fitness before sanctioning a £3m permanent move from Barcelona; a deal which could be in jeopardy should the Hammers manage to add Cambiasso to their already impressive summer additions, which have seen them add Carl Jenkinson, Angelo Ogbonna, Pedro Obiang and Dimitri Payet.

What would Cambiasso add to the West Ham midfield?

New manager Slaven Bilic oversaw the addition of Obiang earlier this summer, giving him another athletic, physical option in the middle alongside Cheikhou Kouyate - and possibly Song.

However, Cambiasso is a more technically gifted player with excellent quality on the ball and a wide range of passing - a huge factor in a career which has seen him play for Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

Having proved his class in the Premier League last season, Cambiasso would be a superb free transfer signing for West Ham, who may be looking for a deep lying playmaker having already collected box-to-box midfielders.

Fears For Former Man Utd and West Ham Star Ravel Morrison After Injury Blow

Former West Ham and Manchester United midfielder Ravel Morrison may be looking at a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Morrison was involved in Lazio's friendly against Vicenza yesterday, but had to be helped from the pitch by the club's physios after picking up an injury in the 20th minute of the match.

According to Italian daily Il Messaggero, there is considerable fear at Lazio that Morrison has picked up a problem with his ligaments.

If such an injury was to be confirmed, the midfielder could be looking at a lengthy spell out of action.

The midfielder has only been able to officially play for Lazio from this summer after he departed West Ham in February.
